Modeshift School of the Year 2017 announced at the Houses of Parliament

The 2017 National STARS School Travel Awards took place at the Houses of Parliament last month. Modeshift STARS is the national schools awards scheme that has been established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable school travel.

Andrew Jones MP who presented the awards said “It is inspiring to learn about the creative and innovative ways schools are promoting sustainable travel. The STARS scheme ensures that young people and their families are more active and helps to reduce congestion on our roads, particularly at peak times. “This government is absolutely committed to improving how people travel and ensuring that people’s journeys are cheaper, safer and better for the environment.”
Ladycross Infant school won National STARS Primary School of the year for their commitment to best practice in sustainable school travel. Working closely with Derbyshire County Council’s Travel Smart Programme the school have shown an 11% decrease in car use in 3 years, with only 16% of journeys to school being made by car. Mr Hancock, Class teacher says “To be presented with this award is a real honour, this highlights the commitment from all of the pupils, staff, local authority and wider community. Taking part in Modeshift STARS has really helped our school embed a culture of sustainable travel within our curriculum and this award just shows that.”

The Grammar School at Leeds won the National STARS Secondary School of the year Secondary reducing car use by 9%, they have done this by using an innovative approach in creating GSAL Transport Limited providing an in-house bus service for students to use for school travel within a 30mile radius.

The competition was hard fought between the six current STARS Schools of the Region, these were:

  • Yorkshire & The Humber – Boothferry Primary School, East Riding of Yorkshire
  • Midlands – Ladycross Infant School, Derbyshire
  • South West – Abbey Meads Primary School, Swindon

  • Yorkshire & The Humber – The Grammar School at Leeds

New funding to boost school facilities and healthy lifestyles

Schools are to receive £415 million to help pupils benefit from healthier, more active lifestyles, Education Secretary Justine Greening announced today (28 February 2017).

Primary, secondary and sixth-form colleges will be able to use the funding to pay for facilities to support physical education (PE), after-school activities and healthy eating.

Schools will also be able to use the new healthy pupils capital programme to improve facilities for children with physical conditions or support young people struggling with mental health issues.

Alongside the funding for the PE and sport premium, breakfast clubs and universal infant free school meals, it represents over £1.3 billion investment in the 2018 to 2019 academic year to help young people live healthier lifestyles. This builds on wider government work such as the recent sports strategy.

Education Secretary Justine Greening said:

Schools can really help our children get a healthy start in life from exercise and sport, and also from knowing what a healthy diet means. It’s not only good for them while they’re in education, but the health and wellbeing benefits can last a lifetime.

That’s why we’re investing £415 million in facilities to support sports, after-school activities and promoting healthy eating, so we can secure the future health of our young people.

Local authorities and larger multi-academy trusts will receive an allocation for schools and will make decisions locally on how this money is invested. Smaller multi-academy trusts (MATs), individual academies and sixth-form centres will be able to bid for grants for specific one-off projects.

The money – from the Soft Drinks Industry Levy – will be available to schools in the 2018 to 2019 financial year and more details on how the fund will be distributed will be published later this year. Government has also pledged to ensure that the amount schools receive will not fall below £415 million regardless of the funds generated by the levy.

The healthy pupils capital programme will build on the government’s plans for schools to provide a longer school day by changing the focus of the scheme to provide new facilities or improve existing ones to make it easier for a range of extra-curricular activities to be provided.

Notes to editors

The new healthy pupils capital programme funding will be available in 2018 to 2019. All state-funded primary, secondary and sixth-form schools in England will be eligible to receive funding through one of two mechanisms, as follows:

  • all local authority community, foundation and voluntary-controlled schools will receive an allocation to their responsible body through a central formula which will account for pupil numbers. Voluntary-aided schools will also be funded in this instance as part of the local authority allocation. Also eligible will be MATs that currently qualify for a direct school condition capital allocation. Responsible bodies will then make spending decisions based on local context
  • smaller MATs, single-academy trusts and sixth-form centres will be eligible to bid for funding through a new healthy pupils capital fund.

Information on the allocation formula, spending guidance and bidding criteria will follow in the summer.

YST runs additional free seminar – What Bikeability can do for your school

Following the success of the two seminars in November 2016 the YST will be running a third seminar ‘Maximising What Bikeability Can do for Your Schools’ in March. This is a free seminar targeted at those engaged in the strategic planning of Bikeability from Local Authorities, private providers and SGO Host Schools.

The seminar will enable delegates to explore the impact Bikeability has on outcomes for young people that go far deeper and wider than learn to ride or safer cycling schemes. Schools are already recognising the contribution Bikeability can make to the physical development of the individual child and the opportunities for it to support cross curricular learning too.

This seminar will help strategic planners ensure that all schools are aware of the full impact Bikeability can have in developing the whole child including their cognitive, social, creative and health abilities. This will enable strategic planners to support instructors in maximising the impact their courses have on all children.

The seminar will be for 3 hours and held in Loughborough on 27 March, 10 am – 1pm.

Big Pedal Registration Open!

Schools across the country are being invited to get involved in The Big Pedal 2017 – Sutrans’ national challenge to get more young people cycling and scooting to school, backed by double Olympic gold medallist cyclist Joanna Rowsell Shand.

The Big Pedal 2017, which runs from Monday 20 to Friday 31 March, will see participants across the UK leave their cars at home and get on their bikes and scooters for their journeys to and from school.

Powered by Sustrans and funded by the Bicycle Association on behalf of the cycle industry through its Bike Hub scheme, The Big Pedal is the UK’s largest competition of its kind.

During the 10 days participating primary and secondary schools will compete with one another to make the most journeys by bike or scooter.

This year’s theme is ‘Around the world in 10 days’, with pupils tracking their progress on a map of the world, learning about the countries and cities they pass through on their way.

Joanna Rowsell Shand is supporting The Big Pedal for the second year running.

One of the best British cyclists of her generation, Joanna has won five world titles across individual and team events and gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

She said:

“Cycling is great for young people’s health, confidence and independence. The safer and more comfortable they feel on their bikes, the more they will enjoy cycling.

“The Big Pedal campaign is a fantastic way for kids to cycle together whilst learning about the rules of the road in a fun, engaging way. I hope this year as many schools as possible will take part in the UK’s largest school cycling and scooting event.”

 Thousands more people will be encouraged to cycle and walk to work thanks to a £64 million government investment, Transport Minister Andrew Jones today (26 January) announced.


The funding will support local projects over three years from 2017 – 2020 and form part of a wider government package of more than £300 million to boost walking and cycling during the current parliament. By 2040 the government aims to make this part of everyday life and walking and cycling the natural choice for shorter journeys.


The money will deliver:

  • more safety and awareness training for cyclists
  • extra secure cycle storage
  • bike repair and maintenance courses
  • road safety measures
  • mapping information for pedestrians
  • real time bus information through smart phone apps or information at bus stops
  • increased focus on car sharing clubs


The funding will also target those looking to get back into work because access to transport and the cost of travel often restricts where jobseekers can look for work and their ability to attend interviews. They will also benefit from discount bus travel and bike loans.


Transport Minister Andrew Jones said:


“We are committed to improving how people travel and this investment will ensure that people’s journeys are cheaper, safer and better for the environment. It will help people to become more active and better transport planning will reduce congestion on our roads – particularly at peak times.


“This investment will also help people access jobs, education and training – specifically targeting those looking to get back into work, as part of our relentless drive to make this a country that works for everyone.”


The funding could lead to:

  • 95 million fewer miles in car journeys
  • 99,000 extra walking trips per day and;
  • 40,000 extra cycling trips per day

Stephen Joseph, Chief Executive, Campaign for Better Transport said:

“We strongly welcome this announcement of the access fund projects and the new cycling and walking to work fund. The evidence suggests that these kinds of projects can remove barriers to work, help local communities and businesses and also tackle local transport problems by giving people attractive alternatives to car use. We look forward to working with the Government, the authorities involved, and other organisations to develop and learn from these projects.”

All English transport authorities (outside London) were invited to bid for the funding. The following 25 successful local authority bidders will each receive a share of the £60 million Sustainable Travel Access Fund for 2017-20:

TABS issues Ebike training guidance

TABS has produced a couple of ebike training documents – a simple ‘top tips’ for riders (eg. casual hires of ebikes) and more detailed guidance (eg for first time ebike purchasers).

Many thanks to those who helped contribute to the content, and to BikePlus who funded the production of the documents, as part of their Shared Electric Bicycle Research programme.

Bikeability Trust being formed!

A Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) is currently being set up – called the Bikeability Trust. Their remit is to be an independent structure that cares for the long-term welfare of Bikeability, and get best value-for-money for the industry. It will have 3 main, interlinked aims:


  • Maximising effectiveness of Bikeability (from funding through to training, to achieving outcomes ie. cycling more, and safely)
  • Promotion of Bikeability
  • Develop Bikeability – ensure it keeps improving, innovating, in line with desired outcomes


Once established, the Bikeability Trust will take on the support functions currently managed by SDG including distribution of award materials, scheme registration, QA, database, grants and monitoring.  As a charity, it is anticipated that there will be significant cost savings that will benefit Bikeability in general.

It is anticipated that the Bikeability Trust will be in a position to start operating from next spring.  More information will be available shortly, via the Bikeability Trust itself!

Innovative Multi-Use Games Area in Wokingham

HAGS worked in partnership with Wokingham Borough Council to develop an innovative Multi- Use Games Area (MUGA), aimed at tackling inactivity, encouraging community spirit and promoting the practice of different sports for all ages and abilities. Installed on the Gorse Ride playing field, the MUGA perfectly complements the existing community facility (the FBC centre) which is owned and operated by the Finchampstead Baptist Church.

The MUGA was designed through consultation and engagement with the local Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG), Finchampstead Parish Council and other community representatives. Wokingham BC Assistant Project Manager Sam Warwick tells us “the main priority was to make families feel welcome”.

The new MUGA has provided Wokingham with a track which they are now using for cycle training, including:

  • Bikeability balance
  • Bikeability learn to ride
  • Bikeability Level 1 training
  • Adult cycle training
  • Cycling for over 60’s group and Cycling for Mental Health group
